Opening Weekend – the Fan Experience

“We made it!” cried a fan when the Paramount stars looped around the screen at the May 7th, 7pm premiere showing of Star Trek. The crowd cheered.

Despite arriving an hour before showtime, my wife and I were only 5 rows from the front. On an IMAX screen, this is problematic, but the movie was still enjoyable. One fan was promoting his book, “The James T. Kirk Guide to Dating,” and giving a few away. Other fans were showing off their costumes. And the NYC Scifi Meetup had reserved quite a few seats for its members.

The next night (yes, I saw it twice already) was a guys night out. This audience also cheered and laughed at all the traditional lines. The creators included a lot of shout-outs to the fan-base while taking the franchise in a whole new direction.

Overall an excellent time at the movies and looking forward to the truly new generation of Star Trek.

Hope you all saw it and had a great time. Here’s another perspective of the guy’s night out: http://hawley.blogs.com/hawleyblog/2009/05/nerd-out-and-prosper.html
